The game is stuffed full of innovation and beauty, and now a whole new generation will get to experience it. Originally released in , Golden Axe once again proved that the Genesis was THE place to go for arcade to console conversions. Being able to choose from a male warrior, a female warrior, and a dwarf — all able to use weapons and monsters to decimate foes — is still great fun. Like most Virtual Console games, Golden Axe is an excellent multi-player game, and deserves to be looked at by a generation who may have missed out on the Genesis.
Golden Axe is just as enjoyable as it was seventeen years ago, but before you go spending your hard earned Wii points, consider this: Which do you enjoy more?
Golden Axe or Golden Axe 2? Quite possibly the best game available for the VC although Mario 64 does make for some stiff competition Gunstar Heroes is a masterpiece in every way. Gunstar Heroes is a special game to me.
So purchasing this gem was a top priority of mine, yet I worried. Both additions are icing on the cake. All added up, this is the best way to play Gunstar Heroes. With the added functionality of the Wii emulation though Gunstar Heroes is a no-brainer.
Along with Gunstar Heroes , this was the most surprising Virtual Console launch title. Ristar is an excellent platform game that stands alongside the best the Genesis has to offer.
Everything within the game is well conceived and polished. The game feels like a perfect mix of Sonic and Bionic Commando. Your out-stretched arms will accomplish various tasks, such as: Climbing, swinging, grabbing, and attacking.
Upon buying the Wii, I made a decision to purchase two Genesis games a month for the sake of writing this feature. Ristar is the best looking game on the Virtual Console. Seeing the action take place in p is a treat and everything works perfectly. Like Gunstar Heroes , the emulation runs without a hitch, and the classic controller fits in nicely with the simplistic gameplay. Seeing the game in p is worth it alone.
It would be madness, insanity, cats and dogs living together. Unsurprisingly, the game that started it all is here. Sonic The Hedgehog features — you know what? The true question is whether or not the original game was a good choice for Sega to go with. Of course it was. While it lacks the gameplay features of its sequels, it still plays extremely well. The first month of Genesis Virtual Console releases was a good start. Real GG games look like that, too. You can also turn the blur effect on and off, like the original system, which, believe it or not, has merit for racing games like Sonic Drift 2, smoothing the tracks.
Lastly, there is a the setting of Performance: Original and Special, which I am not sure what they do as of now, but it probably enhances the game for flicker issues and other problems of the GG hardware. Buttons can also be reconfigured. I've been extremely impressed with all of Sega's classic games on the 3DS. They clearly put in a lot more effort than Nintendo did, because the Sega virtual console games have significantly more bonus features than the very bare-bones Nintendo virtual console games.
I think my favorite little touch is the 3D effect. If you're playing in dot-by-dot mode, the game is rendered in the original resolution and framed by a Game Gear to take up the extra screen space. If you use the 3D slider on the console while using this mode, the Game Gear is actually 3D. The buttons stick out, the console has curves, the big bulky screen protector protrudes, and the actual game is sunken into the screen.
